Cro-Magnon baseball, painted deer hide, c. 20,000 BCE

This baseball, “signed” with representations of their totem animals by members of the Altamira Bisons and Chauvet Ponies, is believed to be the oldest ball ever found. Carbon dated to 20,000 BCE, it was unearthed in the Dordogne by a latter-day shaman emerging from a trance, shortly after chanting “Lascaux Mets! Lascaux Mets!”
