MYTHOPOETIC PAINTED BASEBALLS
By Carol Zaloom

Histories by Mikhail Horowitz

Two Olympian baseballs, painted oxhide, c. late Bronze Age

Unearthed in Delos in the seventh century A.D., these two balls—thought by light-hitting historians to have been painted by the Master of Triandos—depict Zeus, Dionysus, Athena, Artemis, and other Olympians. Their intended use may have been for batting practice at the earliest Olympic games, but any dings or dents they might have incurred seem to have been miraculously repaired.
